Assessing Population-Level Effects of Anthropogenic Disturbance on a Marine Mammal Population

چکیده

The Population Consequences of Disturbance (PCoD) model is a conceptual framework used to assess the potential for population-level consequences following exposure animals disturbance activity or stressor. This four-step process, progressing from changes in individual behavior and/or physiology, health, then vital rates, and finally effects. Despite its simplicity, there are few complete PCoD models available any marine mammal species due lack data parameterize many steps. Here, we present an application migrating humpback whales exposed simulated commercial seismic survey scenario. We approached two ways; first, sequentially forwards through steps basing our assessment on lactating females. cohort was considered be most vulnerable terms energetic costs disturbance, likely influence change population growth future breeding success. Field measurements behavioral responses air guns previous study were agent-based (ABM). ABM estimate probability response, where response defined as migratory movement female-calf pairs, duration resulting delay migration. estimated migration females created with which results approach suggested low surveys humpbacks. Working backwards framework, investigated “worst case” scenarios that could potentially lead effect. started increasing calf mortality assumed time greater than 48 h would increase risk. determined context this occur (resting area) tested within ABM. illustrates how can make management decisions regarding animal populations anthropogenic stressors.

Fitting Models of the Population Consequences of Acoustic Disturbance to Data from Marine Mammal Populations

To build an ecological modeling frameworek that facilitates understanding of the at-sea condition and health of various species of marine mammals. We will use the results from these models to explore and quantify the impact of different types of disturbance (both environmental and anthropogenic) on these species. Modeling will be within a Bayesian framework, which will allow us to fully account...

Assessing the Deepwater Horizon oil spill impact on marine mammal population through acoustics: endangered sperm whales.

Long-term monitoring of endangered species abundance based on acoustic recordings has not yet been pursued. This paper reports the first attempt to use multi-year passive acoustic data to study the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the population of endangered sperm whales. Prior to the spill the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center (LADC) collected acoustic recordings near the spi...

Herd-level bovine tuberculosis risk factors: assessing the role of low-level badger population disturbance

Bovine TB (bTB) is endemic in Irish cattle and has eluded eradication despite considerable expenditure, amid debate over the relative roles of badgers and cattle in disease transmission. Using a comprehensive dataset from Northern Ireland (>10,000 km(2); 29,513 cattle herds), we investigated interactions between host populations in one of the first large-scale risk factor analyses for new herd ...

Marine mammal population decline linked to obscured by-catch.

Declines of marine megafauna due to fisheries by-catch are thought to be mitigated by exclusion devices that release nontarget species. However, exclusion devices may instead conceal negative effects associated with by-catch caused by fisheries (i.e., unobserved or discarded by-catch with low postrelease survival or reproduction). We show that the decline of the endangered New Zealand (NZ) sea ...

The effects of fasting on the level of happiness in the general population of Kermanshah, Iran

Background & Objectives: Fasting in the month of Ramadan has several positive effects on the emotional and mental state and improves happiness in the community. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fasting on the level of happiness in the general population. Materials and Methods: In this study, we used pretest-posttest analysis to evaluate the hypothesis, and the study population con...
